Video reframing: planning footage for several formats
Effective video reframing starts at the shoot. If you know the footage will become vertical, keep subjects near the centre, leave headroom and avoid placing key text at the edges. A wide shot of two people side by side cannot fit into a narrow frame without cropping one, so we use keyframed pans or suggest cutting between them. Tell us the platforms you target, because each has its own safe areas covered by interface elements.
Resolution matters. Cropping a 16:9 frame to vertical uses only part of the picture, so 4K masters give better results than 1080p. Graphics, logos and burned-in titles that sit near the edges will be cut off, so send versions without them if possible. If you plan captions, leave room at the bottom. Provide the master, a list of key moments and where each version will be posted.

Why does my widescreen video look cropped on TikTok?
A widescreen frame is much wider than a vertical one, so the sides are cut off. Reframing moves the crop to follow the subject instead of leaving it centred on empty space.
Should I shoot in vertical or reframe later?
If vertical is your main destination, shooting for it gives the best framing. If you need several formats, shoot wide with space around the subject and reframe later.
